Don’t use words you’re not sure about

This is very important - don’t use words in your important essays when you aren’t sure about what they mean. If someone reading your essay sees a complicated word used in completely the wrong way, they’re going to assume a few things, all bad:

You have a poor vocabulary, because you’ve used a word with no idea of its correct meaning.
You don’t really know what you’re doing with the essay, because you’re desperately throwing in complicated words to try to impress the reader.

One or two incorrectly used words can really annoy your reader and influence their attitude about the rest of your essay.
