The difference between recognising and recalling

When you’re reading something, all the words are there in front of you - all you have to do is remember what each word means.

However, if you’re writing something, you actually have to think up yourself any words you want to use from your memory. This is harder than just recognising words that are already there on the page. You’ll only be able to think up a suitable word to use in your sentence if you’re reasonably familiar with that word and use it occasionally in your conversation or writing.
