Dependent clauses or subordinate clauses
A dependent clause relies on another clause to make sense:

The dependent clause does tell us that Sam is good at tennis, but because of the ‘although’ it’s not a complete sentence by itself. If in doubt, try writing it as a sentence to see if it makes sense on its own:
Although Sam is good at tennis.
Nope! Doesn’t make sense by itself, so it’s a dependent clause. There are three main types of dependent clauses. Each type does a certain thing in a sentence.
