Subordination
You can also join two independent clauses by changing one of them into a dependent clause. This is known as subordination - you’re changing an independent clause into a subordinate clause. The example sentence turns into this:
Although Jake hit the ball, Jeremy managed to catch it.
By turning the first clause into a dependent clause by adding ‘although’, the two clauses fit together nicely and form a complete sentence.
