Some language assumes something about the gender of certain people based on what they do, or places more importance on one sex than the other. This comes up often on invites:

This implies that you are the first person invited and that you’re welcome to bring your ‘possession’, i.e., your wife. You’re better off using a more gender neutral invite and using ‘spouse’ or ‘partner’ instead of ‘wife’:
