Fractions
If you don’t have proper equation editing software, the forward slash can be used to write fractions:
We’ll need 3/4 of a cup of milk.
The address of a website on the Internet is written using forward slashes; for instance, the address of my university:
After the ‘http:’ there are two forward slashes.
The backward slash has no real use in writing, although it is used on computer systems to specify where a certain folder or file is in the computer’s file structure:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users
