Expletive constructions

Here is a typical expletive construction. Expletive constructions are sentences that begin with ‘it is’, or ‘there are’, or ‘there is’:

There is no call for that sort of behaviour.

The verb ‘is’ has to agree in number with the subject, which comes after it. ‘There’ is not the subject of the sentence.

There are no second chances in life.

‘Chances’ is a plural subject, so the verb ‘are’ is plural as well.
