Conceptual storyboard

The conceptual storyboard is simpler and is developed earlier in the process, before filming actually starts. It usually consists of a sequence of images, without specific camera and sound-effect instructions. It gives a more general idea of the visual style of the film. For instance, the storyboards for a film noir film might be very dark looking paintings that set the mood of the film - a dark, brooding city.

Here’s an example of a single storyboard frame setting the scene for the type of city the rest of the movie takes place in - a dark, fog-enshrouded city by a dark body of water:
