The fibbing ‘lie’
The word ‘lie’ isn’t just a verb that means to recline in a horizontal position. It can also be a noun, which describes a statement made by someone that is untrue. You may have seen it used in a sentence like this:
People who are dishonest will often tell a lie.
In this sentence, the word ‘lie’ is a noun; it means the same thing as a ‘fib’, which you may be familiar with. Some people will also use the word ‘lie’ as a verb:
Will you lie for me?
In this sentence, ‘lie’ is a verb. The writer of the sentence is asking the reader to not tell the truth for them.
