Varied audiences
Sometimes you’ll be in the situation where a wide range of people may read your writing. This is tricky, because you don’t always know what tone to use when you write. One option is to tailor your writing towards the lowest common denominator of the possible audience. The lowest common denominator in this case, refers to the person with the least knowledge and intelligence who might read your writing.
However, this can result in essays that are filled with explanations and not much actual ‘meaty’ discussion of the topic. Usually the best option is to write so that the majority of your possible audience will understand, and give links or references where the minority can go to find out more.
One other option when your audience is likely to be mixed is to divide your writing into different sections or even separate documents, with each section or document suited to one audience type.
