Indirect objects
Some verbs, like ‘sell’, take both a direct object and an indirect object. If the verb is ‘sold’, the direct object is the thing that is sold. The indirect object is who or what the thing is sold to. Same for verbs like ‘give’ - the thing you give is the direct object. The person or thing you give the thing to is the indirect object.
The direct object in this sentence is the thing that was given - the presents. The indirect object is who Michael gave the presents to - ‘his brothers’. One of the most common indirect objects is ‘me’:
