The sentence
In order to write and speak well, you need to have a good working knowledge of grammar in the English language. By working knowledge, I mean knowing things that you actually put into practice everyday when you're writing or speaking. It’s no use knowing that i becomes before e except after c unless you actually remember it when you’re writing the word ‘receipt’.
Just about anything you write down on paper or say in everyday speech is a sentence of some sort. It’s a fundamental structure that you can use to write essays, novels, movie scripts, or to make an oral (talking) presentation or speech. Now, in doing a lot of these things, it’s important to make it sound good to the reader or the listener, otherwise you might make a bit of a fool of yourself. So understanding how the English language works is not just important for scrounging as many marks as possible in exams and assignments, but also for succeeding everyday.
