Complex sentences

Complex sentences contain one independent clause and at least one dependent clause:

Michael hit the ball, although he was tired.

‘Michael hit the ball’ is an independent clause. ‘He was tired’ would have been an independent clause, except for the "although" stuck on the front, which makes it into a dependent clause.
