A subject complement gives extra information about the subject that it complements. There are also object complements. Object complements tell us extra information about the object that they complement:
The first part of the sentence could be used just by itself - ‘I caught the guard’. However, we have added an object complement to the sentence. The object of the sentence is the ‘guard’ - it’s who I ‘caught’. The object complement comes after the object of the sentence and adds some extra information about the object - the guard was ‘napping’ when I busted him.
